Yea, I am way past due on this but better late than never...right? OK, so we left last Sunday for Florida and came home this past Wednesday. We were undecided whether we would still make the trip being that Cade had just been through a rough time with the RSV hospitalization. He was 100% better so we decided to go for it. We did cancel the sleep study being that he was recovering from RSV it would have been a complete waste. We started our visits off with Sara Plager, the Speech and Language Pathologist. She deals with PWS patients all the time, so we wanted an evaluation with her to see where Cade was at with Speech. He cooperated, for the most part. He has such a nice vocabulary, but only uses it when he wants to. He obviously gave her enough of what she wanted to see though because she was very pleased. She said to keep doing whatever it is we are doing. She doesn't sugar coat things at all, so hearing this made us feel really good. Speech is more often than not a big delay in PWS kids. I owe a lot to our wonderful therapist who attacked this issue very early on with Cade. We have been doing Speech therapy 2x/week since about 4 months old. I know a lot of it just depends on the child, but the early intervention makes a huge difference as well. She also graded him with a language test book type thing. She said he is age appropriate or above...One category she scored him at 24 months and the other at 28 months. Can't remember which categories those fell under. He is 20 months old. I also don't know how accurate those tests are. I'm certainly not complaining though. Then on to our visit with Dr. Miller, overall she said he looks great. He is finally on the charts for weight...it only took two years! His growth curve is still moving along nicely. Our main goal for him right now is walking and she agrees that it is purely a self confidence thing. He is more than capable. She suspects adrenal insufficiency, but we need to follow up with testing to confirm. She also definitely notices his eyes turning in more, which we have too. So, we have an appt. this coming week for that. Everything else went really well! I am so blessed to have a wonderful team of doctors looking after my child.
So, today has been mentally taxing on me. From finishing up my Summer classes and final tests, to losing a dear, fellow PWS Mom friend, and then taking Cade to his first swim practice for the Special Olympics. I've shared extreme highs and extreme lows today, but as I unwind tonight I feel compelled to share this with whoever decides to read it. Some of you may know this about me, but most probably do not. I have always felt a strong attraction to working with those with special needs. It just always felt right and from a young age I remember looking up local jobs and volunteer opportunities..always searching for something to fulfill that desire. I was actually enrolled in college for Family and Consumer Science and was planning to go into Special Education. I had taken the Parapro assessment and actively looking for Para jobs. Then I became pregnant for Cade and life had other plans. Given my role now to Cade, isn't it ironic? OK, so here is an e-mail I dug up from my in...
that's all great news! give cade a big hug from me
